In her travel story Mr. Ma's Tigers, Martha Gellhorn includes many translational gems of the same Mr. Ma, who travelled with her in China as her interpreter. Describing one of the atrocities commited during the Sino-Japanese War, he concludes: "Since village girls are very particular about their virginity, they resisted furiously. But they were nuded and very seriously raped".

Travelling through China, one comes across odd, funny, sometimes mysterious messages in English. Many of those seem to result from too much trust in the various translation programs that exist on the internet. I'm sure those fluent in Chinese are able to understand what and where went wrong when the following items were put on this charming Shanghai restaurant menu.

Keeping the baby. Why not, it's highly affordable. But the father's gotta go, judging from the item on the next page.

At least the guy's not simply wasted, but deliciously roasted and offered at a decent price. On another page there was "affection beef". A true family restaurant.

Pot does many things. Or does it?

Civilized village. Does that mean that you cannot roast your husband or do pig's intestines?
